State GDP is the fastest way to see where economic output is concentrated in the United States. California and Texas dominate the top of the table, but the reasons are very different: one leans heavily on technology, entertainment, and trade, while the other blends energy, manufacturing, logistics, and rapid population growth.

GDP rankings also show how unevenly economic power is distributed. A handful of states generate enormous output, while smaller states can sit near the bottom simply because they have fewer people and smaller metro areas.

Looking at output per person tells a different story, though: smaller states like Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Washington often rank near the top of GDP-per-capita tables, because a concentrated finance, biotech, or tech sector can outweigh having a much smaller overall population.

At the other end of the scale, states like Vermont, Wyoming, and Mississippi post the smallest total GDP figures, largely a reflection of small populations rather than weak productivity.
