Border counts are a surprisingly strong way to learn the map because they force you to think spatially. Missouri and Tennessee stand out because they touch so many states, while Alaska and Hawaii sit at the opposite extreme with no land borders at all.

The number of neighbors a state has is shaped by rivers, colonial claims, surveying, and historical compromise. That means border counts are really a compressed lesson in how the map itself was made.

Missouri and Tennessee are tied for the most neighbors of any state, each bordering eight others. Kentucky comes close behind with seven. At the other end, Maine borders only New Hampshire, making it the only contiguous state with a single land neighbor.

Missouri's eight neighbors are Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. Tennessee borders Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri. Between them, these two states touch nearly a third of the country. The borders get interesting at the edges too — the Four Corners, where Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado meet, is the only spot in the country where four states share a single point, created entirely by survey lines rather than any natural feature.

Kentucky's seven neighbors include a genuine oddity: a small detached piece of the state, known as the Kentucky Bend, is cut off from the rest of Kentucky entirely by a loop in the Mississippi River and can only be reached by driving through Tennessee or Missouri.
