Which state borders 8 other states?
Border Count Challenge: Which States Have the Most Neighbors?
Border counts are a surprisingly strong way to learn the map because they force you to think spatially. Missouri and Tennessee stand out because they touch so many states, while Alaska and Hawaii sit at the opposite extreme with no land borders at all.
The number of neighbors a state has is shaped by rivers, colonial claims, surveying, and historical compromise. That means border counts are really a compressed lesson in how the map itself was made.
This quiz asks you to see the United States as a connected puzzle rather than a list of isolated shapes. If you can answer these well, your mental map is probably getting much stronger.
