    Scenic Overlooks in Alaska

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamAlaskaUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Alaska has no shortage of scenic overlooks, but they are rarely just decorative roadside pull-offs. Many feel like genuine windows into giant terrain: glacier valleys, tidal arms, mountain walls, river basins, and weather systems moving in real time. A good Alaska overlook often does the work of a museum because it explains the whole landscape in one sweep.

Denali viewpoints along the Parks Highway and in Denali State Park are the most famous. When the mountain is visible, the effect is unforgettable because Denali does not merely sit on the horizon - it dominates it. Viewpoints near Broad Pass and the Kesugi area are especially respected.

Beluga Point on Turnagain Arm is one of the best easy-access overlooks in Southcentral Alaska. The combination of water, tidal flats, steep mountains, and changing light makes it worth stopping more than once.

Bird Point farther down Turnagain Arm is another strong pull-off, especially for travelers who want shoreline access and a wider angle on the arm.

Hatcher Pass offers one of the best high-country driving viewpoints accessible from the Anchorage and Mat-Su area. The tundra-like slopes, mining remnants, and broad valley views make it one of the state's most satisfying short alpine drives.

Thompson Pass near Valdez is a major Alaska overlook zone rather than a single viewpoint. This is where snow, waterfalls, and steep mountain walls all appear at once, and it helps explain why the Richardson Highway is one of the state's great drives.

Glen Alps and Flattop trailhead viewpoints above Anchorage show how unusual the city is geographically. From a short drive you can look back over urban Anchorage, Cook Inlet, and the wider Chugach setting.

Eagle Summit on the Steese Highway is a strong Interior overlook, especially for travelers heading toward higher, drier, more open country north of Fairbanks.

The best Alaska overlooks work because they are tied to movement. Clouds shift, tides change, glaciers catch different light, and mountains disappear and return. That means the same overlook can feel completely different from morning to evening or from one day to the next. In Alaska, viewpoints are not static. They are part of the living weather and scale of the place.
