    State Parks in Arkansas

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamArkansasUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Arkansas has one of the strongest state park systems in the South because the parks are spread across the state's real landscape strengths: mountains, bluffs, lakes, rivers, and historic sites. They are not filler between better-known destinations. In many cases, the parks are the destinations.

Petit Jean State Park is the flagship. It has major overlooks, canyon scenery, Cedar Falls, historic CCC architecture, and a mountain-top setting that introduces first-time visitors to Arkansas at its best.

Mount Magazine State Park is another headliner because it protects the state's highest point and offers some of the broadest views in Arkansas. Cabins, trails, and cliffside scenery give it a very strong weekend-trip identity.

Devil's Den State Park in northwest Arkansas is one of the most beloved parks in the system. Rock crevices, caves, forested trails, and a beautiful lake make it one of the most atmospheric parks in the state.

Pinnacle Mountain State Park matters because it gives the Little Rock area a major natural landmark and strong urban-access hiking.

Lake Ouachita State Park adds a water-centered dimension, with boating, swimming, and one of the cleanest lakes in the region.

Crowley's Ridge State Park shows a different side of Arkansas geography by preserving part of the unusual ridge system that rises above the Delta.

Crater of Diamonds State Park is nationally unique because visitors can actually search for diamonds and keep what they find. That alone gives Arkansas one of the most distinctive state park experiences in the country.

Woolly Hollow, Lake Catherine, and Buffalo Point round out the system with camping, paddling, and access to some of the most practical family recreation in the state.

Arkansas state parks work so well because they feel tied to real landforms and local history. They are scenic, useful, and varied enough that a person could understand a large part of Arkansas just by visiting the park system well.
