Best Family Weekend Destinations in Nevada

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamNevadaUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Nevada's family destinations extend well beyond Las Vegas — though the city has reinvented itself as a family-friendly destination alongside its adult entertainment identity.

    Las Vegas: Family Attractions
The Strip has diversified significantly beyond gambling. Top family attractions: the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, the Discovery Children's Museum (the finest in Nevada), the National Atomic Testing Museum (Cold War nuclear history, adjacent to UNLV), and the Pinball Hall of Fame. The Las Vegas Natural History Museum and the Clark County Museum in Henderson add educational depth. The Fremont Street Experience outdoor concert venue and light show is family-accessible and free. The Mob Museum (National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement) is excellent for teenagers.

    Hoover Dam
45 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip — the Hoover Dam Powerplant Tour goes deep inside the dam structure. The visitor center has good historical exhibits. The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Bridge pedestrian walkway gives an extraordinary aerial view of the dam. Black Canyon water tours (below the dam) combine Colorado River history with accessible paddling for families.

    Great Basin National Park
Nevada's "secret" national park — the Lehman Caves tour (marble cave formations, 1 hour guided) is excellent for families. Wheeler Peak is visible from the visitor center and the Summit Trail is accessible to fit teenagers. The bristlecone pine hike (2.8 miles round trip to Bristlecone Pine grove) is moderate and spectacular.

Spring Mountains/Mount Charleston (Las Vegas area)
A 50-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip to pine forests and 30°F cooler temperatures. In winter, Lee Canyon Ski Area operates 3 chairlifts; in summer, the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area has hiking trails through ponderosa pine and Rocky Mountain white fir forest.

    Reno: National Automobile Museum
The finest car museum in the western US — 200 vehicles spanning automobile history from an 1892 Philion Steam Carriage to rare racing cars. The recreation of period streetscapes around the vehicles makes this unusually engaging for all ages.
