Best Family Weekend Destinations in Tennessee

Tennessee is one of the best family road trip states in the eastern US — combining natural wonders, history, and entertainment across short distances.

Dollywood (Pigeon Forge)
The most successful regional theme park in the US outside of the major chains, Dollywood was founded by Dolly Parton in 1986. The park combines Appalachian culture (craft demonstrations, bluegrass music, mountain food) with modern thrill rides. The LightWood and Wild Eagle roller coasters are major draws. The adjacent Dollywood's Splash Country water park extends the visit. Pigeon Forge's surrounding "Miracle Mile" of tourist attractions is overwhelming — the National Enquirer Live show, the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Show, and dozens of other options crowd the highway.

Tennessee Aquarium (Chattanooga)
The finest aquarium in the inland southeastern US, located on the Chattanooga waterfront. The freshwater "River Journey" building showcases the biodiversity of the Tennessee River watershed — the most biodiverse freshwater system in North America. The ocean "Ocean Journey" building adds a traditional marine aquarium experience. The IMAX theater adjacent is a bonus.

Nashville: Country Music Hall of Fame
A serious, well-funded museum that covers the full history of American country and roots music — from the Carter Family to Hank Williams to modern Nashville production. The RCA Studio B tour (where Elvis and Roy Orbison recorded) is the best museum tour in Nashville. The Johnny Cash Museum (separate, private) is smaller but excellent.

Lookout Mountain and Rock City (Chattanooga)
Point Park's Civil War battlefield, the Incline Railway, the Ruby Falls underground waterfall, and Rock City's "See Seven States" views make Lookout Mountain the most concentrated family attraction in Tennessee outside of the Pigeon Forge corridor.

Roan Mountain State Park (spring/summer)
Roan Mountain's rhododendron bloom (mid-June) is one of the most spectacular natural events in the eastern US — 600 acres of Catawba rhododendron covering open balds above 6,000 feet in pink/purple bloom. The state park campground and cabins make an excellent base.
