Texas Waterfalls and Natural Springs

Texas's waterfalls are concentrated in three areas: the Hill Country, Big Bend's canyon country, and the Edwards Plateau escarpment. The Hill Country is also home to iconic swimming holes fed by natural springs.

Hamilton Pool Preserve
A collapsed grotto near Dripping Springs west of Austin where Crabapple Creek falls 50 feet into a jade-green pool surrounded by overhanging limestone walls. Hamilton Pool is one of the most photographed swimming holes in the US. Reservations required (capacity-limited); the pool is sometimes closed after heavy rainfall when bacteria levels rise.

Barton Springs Pool (Austin)
A 3-acre natural swimming pool fed by Barton Creek springs in Zilker Park in the heart of Austin. The water maintains a constant 68–70°F year-round. The pool has been a community institution since the 1830s — beloved by Austinites across generations. Endangered Barton Springs salamanders live in the pool's sandy bottom.

Gorman Falls (Big Bend Ranch State Park)
A 70-foot waterfall in a remote canyon of Big Bend Ranch State Park, reached via a 3-mile round-trip hike. The falls cascade over travertine deposits (calcium carbonate buildup) and are surrounded by maidenhair ferns. One of the most lush and unexpected landscapes in West Texas.

Krause Springs (Spicewood)
A private preserve in Burnet County with 32 natural springs feeding a series of pools and a small waterfall. The main swimming area is a spring-fed pool with a rope swing. The springs maintain a constant 68°F. One of the most classic Hill Country swimming holes, operating as a day-use and camping area since 1955.

Pedernales Falls State Park
The Pedernales River cuts through tilted limestone layers creating dramatic tiered falls and chutes. Flash flooding is a serious risk here — the park can close on short notice. The swimming area downstream is excellent; the rapids section is best viewed from the overlook trail.
