    Top Universities in Utah

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamUtahUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Utah's universities are anchored by the University of Utah and Brigham Young University — two institutions with very different characters but both with strong research and professional programs.

University of Utah (Salt Lake City)
The flagship public research university of Utah and a member of the Pac-12 (now ACC/Big 12 athletic conferences). The U of U is particularly strong in medicine (University of Utah Health is the leading academic medical center between Denver and the Pacific Coast), computer science (significant AI and gaming research), business (David Eccles School of Business), and law. The university is located on the bench above Salt Lake City at 4,600 feet — the campus view of the Wasatch Front is exceptional.

    Brigham Young University (Provo)
The largest private religious university in the US (~35,000 students), BYU is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. BYU is particularly strong in accounting (consistently top-ranked), animation and game development (the Centre for Animation), management, and the law school (J. Reuben Clark Law School). The honor code — strict behavioral standards including no alcohol, coffee, or premarital sex — shapes the campus culture. BYU students have exceptionally high rates of service (LDS mission service requires two years abroad) and international experience.

    Utah State University (Logan)
The land-grant university in the Cache Valley, strong in agriculture, engineering, and environmental sciences. USU's Space Dynamics Laboratory is a major contractor for NASA and the Department of Defense — an unusual asset for a land-grant university. Logan's Cache Valley location offers excellent outdoor recreation access.

Weber State University (Ogden) and Utah Valley University (Orem) are teaching-focused universities serving the rapidly growing Wasatch Front communities north and south of Salt Lake City.

Southern Utah University (Cedar City) anchors the southern Utah educational market and is known for the Utah Shakespeare Festival — one of the finest regional Shakespeare theaters in the US.
