    Top Universities in Washington State

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamWashingtonUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Washington's universities are anchored by the University of Washington (a major global research institution) and Washington State University, with several strong private and regional institutions.

    University of Washington (Seattle)
One of the top public research universities in the world — UW is consistently ranked in the top 20 globally in research output and in the top 10 in medicine, computer science, and social work. The Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering is a major feeder for the Pacific Northwest tech industry. UW Medicine — including the UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center — is the leading academic medical complex in the Pacific Northwest. The UW's total research expenditure exceeds $2 billion annually, making it one of the highest in the country.

    Washington State University (Pullman)
The state's land-grant university, WSU is strong in agriculture, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and engineering. The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (opened 2017 in Spokane) addresses the physician shortage in eastern Washington. WSU's Cougar Country campus in Pullman is surrounded by the rolling Palouse wheat-farming landscape — one of the most distinctive agricultural environments in the US.

    Seattle University
A Jesuit private university in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, known for its law school (excellent placement in Pacific Northwest firms), School of Education, and a strong undergraduate business program. The campus in the heart of Seattle provides urban internship access across sectors.

    Gonzaga University (Spokane)
A Jesuit university best known for its law school and its extraordinarily successful basketball program (produced multiple NBA players and coaches). Gonzaga's campus in Spokane is compact and beautifully maintained.

Western Washington University (Bellingham) and Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma) round out a strong tier of regional universities with loyal alumni networks and quality undergraduate education.
