Best Family Weekend Destinations in Wisconsin

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamWisconsinUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Wisconsin's family destinations range from Door County's orchards and fish boils to the Dells' waterparks to Milwaukee's award-winning museums.

    Wisconsin Dells
The "Waterpark Capital of the World" — more indoor waterpark square footage than any other location in the world (Noah's Ark, Kalahari, Great Wolf Lodge, Chula Vista, and Wilderness Resort are among the parks). Beyond the waterparks: the original Wisconsin Dells boat tours (Upper and Lower Dells — the sandstone formations are genuinely extraordinary), the Tommy Bartlett Water Show, and the Circus World Museum in nearby Baraboo make the Dells area a full multi-day family destination.

Milwaukee: Discovery World and the Milwaukee County Zoo
Discovery World (on the lakefront — a science and technology museum with a Great Lakes research vessel, a freshwater aquarium, and hands-on innovation exhibits) and the Milwaukee County Zoo (1,400 animals, a small train, and the award-winning new Sea Lion facility) are Milwaukee's top family attractions. The Milwaukee Art Museum (Calatrava's moving wings — the wings open at 10am daily, a spectacle in itself) adds culture.

    Door County
For families: the fish boil dinner (a tradition and a performance — the dramatic fireball moment when kerosene is poured on the boiling cauldron is a highlight for children), the cherry and apple orchards (pick-your-own in July and September), Peninsula State Park's bike trails (20 miles of paved trails), Cave Point County Park's sea caves (wave action visible from the cliff top), and the Washington Island ferry combine for a full Door County family experience.

    Devil's Lake State Park
Family rock climbing and scrambling on the quartzite bluffs — the East Bluff Trail requires scrambling that children ages 8+ find exhilarating. The lake swimming beach (warm, sandy, and gentle) is excellent. The Tumbled Rock Trail (along the base of the West Bluff) and the South Shore Day Use Area give family options at multiple difficulty levels.

    International Crane Foundation (Baraboo)
The only facility in the world where all 15 species of cranes are kept — guided tours show close-up views of whooping cranes (the rarest bird in North America), sandhill cranes, and 13 other species. The whooping crane reintroduction program (using ultralight aircraft to teach migration routes) is described in detail. Excellent for nature-oriented families.
