In order, the last ten states admitted to the Union are: Montana (1889), Washington (1889), Idaho (1890), Wyoming (1890), Utah (1896), Oklahoma (1907), New Mexico (1912), Arizona (1912), Alaska (1959), and Hawaii (1959).

Utah's path to statehood was unusually long and difficult. Congress repeatedly denied its applications for decades, largely because of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' practice of polygamy. Utah was only admitted in 1896, after the church officially renounced the practice.

New Mexico and Arizona were both admitted in 1912, the last two states added to the contiguous 48. It would then be 47 years before the country expanded again, when Alaska and Hawaii both joined in 1959 — Alaska in January and Hawaii in August — bringing the total to 50.

Oklahoma's 1907 admission followed the 1889 land runs, in which the federal government opened previously restricted Native American territory to settlers who raced to stake claims — one of the more dramatic and controversial episodes in the run-up to statehood.
