Best Road Trip Routes in Florida

Florida's geography — a long peninsula plus a 200-mile panhandle — lends itself to several distinct road trip circuits. The state's highways run through beach towns, citrus country, swamp edges, and history-rich colonial cities.

The Keys Highway (US-1 / Overseas Highway)
The 113-mile drive from Florida City to Key West crosses 42 bridges over open water, including the iconic Seven Mile Bridge. Stop at Bahia Honda State Park for the best beach in the Keys, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park for snorkeling, and end in Key West for sunset at Mallory Square. Allow 2 days to do it right; the drive itself takes about 3 hours non-stop.

Florida Panhandle Scenic Byway
From Pensacola east through Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Panama City Beach, Apalachicola, and on to St. George Island — this route follows the Emerald Coast, home to the whitest quartz-sand beaches in the US. Apalachicola is a gem: a historic oyster town with excellent seafood and Victorian architecture. The detour to St. George Island is essential.

Tamiami Trail (US-41)
The original cross-state highway cutting through the Everglades from Miami to Naples. The 75-mile section through Big Cypress and the Everglades passes Shark Valley (alligator-dense), the Miccosukee tribal area, and Fakahatchee Strand. Best driven at sunrise when wildlife is most active.

Nature Coast Loop
From Tampa north through Homosassa Springs, Crystal River (manatee swimming), Cedar Key (historic fishing village), the Suwannee River valley, and back. This lesser-known route shows old Florida — manatees, springs, and towns that haven't changed much since the 1950s.

Space Coast to First Coast
From Kennedy Space Center (Cape Canaveral) north along A1A through the Atlantic coast: New Smyrna Beach, Daytona Beach, St. Augustine (oldest city in the US), and Amelia Island. This 200-mile coastal route covers surfing, history, and some of Florida's most elegant Victorian resort towns.
