High Points and Elevated Terrain in Florida

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamFloridaUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Florida is the flattest state in the continental US — its highest point, Britton Hill in Walton County near the Alabama border, stands at just 345 feet above sea level. That makes it the lowest high point of any US state. But "flat" doesn't mean featureless, and understanding Florida's terrain reveals why the state's geography is actually fascinating.

    Britton Hill (345 ft)
Located in the Florida Panhandle near Lakewood, Britton Hill is a modest forested ridge. A small marker and picnic area commemorate the spot. Despite its unassuming height, it draws peak-baggers completing the highpoint challenge of all 50 states. The surrounding Blackwater River State Forest offers some of the prettiest longleaf pine habitat in the South.

    The Florida Panhandle Ridges
The Panhandle's Red Hills region — spanning from Tallahassee into southern Georgia — reaches elevations of 200–300 feet and hosts a completely different ecosystem than coastal Florida. Red clay soils, rolling hills, and classic Southern plantation landscapes characterize this zone. Torreya State Park sits on bluffs above the Apalachicola River, rising to around 150 feet with dramatic views rare for Florida.

    The Lake Wales Ridge
Running down the center of the Florida peninsula, the Lake Wales Ridge is a series of ancient sand scrub ridges reaching 200–300 feet. This upland corridor is one of Florida's most important ecological zones, harboring rare scrub jays and endemic plants. Bok Tower Gardens, built on the ridge's highest point (324 ft in Polk County), offers panoramic views across central Florida.

    Iron Mountain (324 ft)
Near Lake Wales in Polk County, Iron Mountain is technically higher than Britton Hill within its local context (though not the official state high point by modern surveys). Bok Tower's 205-foot Singing Tower carillon sits atop it — one of the most distinctive landmarks in the state.

    Why Florida's Flatness Matters
Florida's average elevation of just 6 feet above sea level means large portions of the state face significant long-term sea level risk. Understanding the state's elevation is not just trivia — it's directly relevant to flood zones, insurance, and climate policy debates that affect millions of Floridians.
