Top Universities in Indiana

Indiana has two major research universities — Indiana University and Purdue — plus the University of Notre Dame (one of the most recognized private universities in the US).

University of Notre Dame (South Bend)
A nationally ranked research university with extraordinary brand recognition — Notre Dame is the most recognized Catholic university in the world, and its football program (Fighting Irish) is the most nationally followed college football program in the US. Notre Dame is particularly strong in law (Notre Dame Law is consistently top 25), business (Mendoza College of Business), theology, and science. The campus's Gothic architecture (the Golden Dome, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Touchdown Jesus mural) is among the most beautiful in the US.

Indiana University (Bloomington)
Indiana's flagship research university — IU has approximately 43,000 students (Bloomington campus) and is nationally prominent in music (the Jacobs School of Music — the largest music school in the US, with exceptional opera and orchestral programs), business (the Kelley School of Business — consistently top-10 for undergraduate business), law, and the arts. The Lilly Library (rare books and manuscripts — including a Gutenberg Bible and significant literary archives) and the IU Art Museum are exceptional.

Purdue University (West Lafayette)
Indiana's land-grant research university — Purdue has trained more astronauts than any other university in the world (23 Purdue alumni have been astronauts, including Neil Armstrong and Gus Grissom). Purdue is nationally prominent in engineering (consistently top-10, particularly in aeronautical and mechanical engineering), computer science, agriculture (one of the finest ag programs in the US), and pharmacy. Purdue's Research Park is a significant technology commercialization center.

Butler University (Indianapolis)
A selective mid-size university in Indianapolis known for basketball (the Bulldogs have been national finalists twice in the 2010s) and pharmacy (Butler's pharmacy program is consistently top-25 nationally). The campus adjacent to the Indianapolis Museum of Art (Newfields) is beautiful.
