Indiana's Best Waterfalls
Indiana is not a high-waterfall state, and that matters when setting expectations. Twin Falls (Clifty Falls SP)
Twin Falls is part of the same Clifty Falls landscape, but it deserves separate mention because it shows how water moves through the park's broken limestone terrain. During good flow, two channels drop into the gorge near each other, creating a more delicate scene than the main falls. During dry spells, the feature can shrink dramatically, which is why spring and after-rain visits matter so much here.
For visitors trying to understand the park, Twin Falls is useful because it makes the whole canyon system feel connected. The waterfall is not just a photo stop; it is one point in a larger drainage pattern that cuts through the bluffs above Madison.
Rocky Hollow Falls (Turkey Run SP)
Turkey Run State Park is better known for its ladders, covered bridge, sandstone gorges, and Sugar Creek, but Rocky Hollow Falls adds a good waterfall target inside the trail system. The falls are small by national standards, yet the setting is excellent: narrow ravines, layered sandstone, ferns, moss, and cool air trapped in the canyon.
This is a good example of why Indiana waterfalls should be judged by context. Rocky Hollow is memorable because of the hike that leads to it. Trails through Rocky Hollow and Bear Hollow feel almost like a miniature canyon maze, which makes the cascade a natural endpoint rather than the only reason to visit.
Falls of Fall Fork (Hoosier NF)
The Hoosier National Forest holds some of Indiana's quieter waterfall and cascade country. Around the Charles C. Deam Wilderness and the broader southern hill country, small streams drop over sandstone shelves after rain, creating short-lived but beautiful falls. These are not always signed in the way state park waterfalls are, so they appeal most to hikers who are comfortable with maps, forest roads, and variable trail conditions.
The value here is solitude. Compared with Clifty Falls or Turkey Run, Hoosier National Forest waterfall outings feel less developed and more exploratory. Go in spring, avoid assuming summer flow, and treat the waterfall as part of a forest hike rather than a guaranteed spectacle.
Millrace Falls (Metamora)
Metamora's waterfall interest is historical rather than wild. At Whitewater Canal State Historic Site, the millrace channels water through the restored canal-era landscape and helps power the operating gristmill. The drop is modest, but the setting explains how water power shaped small Indiana communities before modern transportation and industry.
That makes Metamora a worthwhile stop for families, school groups, and travelers who want more than a nature walk. The canal, mill, covered bridge, and village setting show a different side of Indiana's water history, where the "waterfall" is part of an engineered working landscape rather than an isolated natural feature.
