Its entire territory sits within the Appalachian Mountains, making it the only state located completely inside this mountain system.

Capital, Largest City, and Identity

Charleston, in the western part of the state along the Kanawha River, is both the capital and the largest city, serving as the state's political and economic center. West Virginia is nicknamed the Mountain State, a name that undersells just how central mountainous terrain is to nearly every aspect of life here — settlement patterns, transportation, and economy all had to work around the topography rather than through it.

Born Out of the Civil War

West Virginia's statehood in 1863 is unique in American history: the state was created when 50 northwestern Virginia counties refused to join the Confederacy and split off to remain in the Union. That founding act reflects deeper regional and economic divisions that predated the war — the mountainous northwest had little in common economically with Virginia's plantation-based eastern regions.
