Best State Parks in West Virginia

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamWest VirginiaUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

West Virginia's state park system is unusually strong for its size, built around the same mountain and river terrain that defines the state's national park and forest lands, and it includes some of the most-visited parks in the eastern United States.

    Blackwater Falls State Park

One of West Virginia's most photographed natural landmarks, Blackwater Falls drops the amber-colored Blackwater River roughly 60 feet into a deep gorge, its distinctive color caused by tannins from surrounding red spruce and hemlock forests. The park's canyon rim trails and overlooks make it one of the most popular parks in the state.

    Babcock State Park

Babcock is home to the Glade Creek Grist Mill, one of the most photographed structures in West Virginia, a reconstructed mill built from pieces of several historic mills to recreate the look of the region's early water-powered industry, set against a backdrop of forested hills near the New River Gorge.

    Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Cass preserves a historic logging town and operates restored steam locomotives on tracks originally built to haul timber out of the surrounding mountains, giving visitors a working piece of West Virginia's early 20th-century logging and rail history rather than just a static museum.

    Pipestem Resort State Park

One of the largest state parks in West Virginia, Pipestem sits above the dramatic Bluestone River Gorge and offers extensive lodging, golf, and hiking infrastructure, including an aerial tramway down into the gorge, making it one of the more full-service parks in the system.

    Watoga State Park

West Virginia's largest state park, Watoga protects extensive forested terrain in the eastern highlands, offering camping, hiking, and a large lake, and reflects the broader conservation work of Depression-era public works programs that built much of the state's park infrastructure.

A System Built on Water, Rail, and Ridgeline

West Virginia's parks consistently showcase the same forces that shaped the state itself — falling water, historic rail and timber infrastructure, and steep forested ridgelines — giving visitors an accessible way to experience the mountain terrain that defines the state.
