    Camping Spots in Alabama

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamAlabamaUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Alabama offers camping year-round thanks to its mild climate, with options ranging from lakeside RV resorts to backcountry sites deep in national forest wilderness.

Cheaha State Park has improved campgrounds with electric hookups near the summit, plus primitive sites along the Pinhoti Trail. Falling asleep at the highest point in Alabama, surrounded by forest, with stars filling the sky is an unforgettable experience.

DeSoto State Park on Lookout Mountain has tent sites, improved campgrounds, and backcountry camping along the CCC-built trails. The campground sits among rhododendron groves that bloom spectacularly in late spring.

Sipsey Wilderness (Bankhead National Forest) offers free dispersed camping throughout 25,000 acres of sandstone canyons and old-growth forest. Set up camp along the Sipsey Fork river and fall asleep to the sound of waterfalls. No permits required, but Leave No Trace ethics are essential.

Gulf State Park has 496 improved campsites just a short walk from the beach. The campground is shaded by live oaks and slash pines, and the beach access is excellent. Book months in advance for peak summer weekends.

Lake Guntersville State Park has lakefront campgrounds with gorgeous views of the 69,000-acre reservoir. Eagle-watching from your campsite is a real possibility — the park is a major wintering ground for bald eagles.

Oak Mountain State Park near Birmingham has over 85 campsites in a 10,000-acre park. It's perfect for metro-area residents who want a quick escape into nature. The lake beach and mountain biking trails are bonuses.

Rickwood Caverns State Park offers camping above a 260-million-year-old limestone cave. Tour the caverns during the day, then camp under the stars at night.

Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville has sites perched on the mountain with easy access to trails and overlooks. The proximity to Huntsville's restaurants and space center makes it a great base camp for exploring north Alabama.

Alabama's camping is affordable, uncrowded, and blessed with a long season — you can camp comfortably from March through November.
