    Family Weekends in Alabama

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamAlabamaUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Alabama is packed with family-friendly destinations that combine outdoor adventure, history, and fun without breaking the bank. The state's mild climate means most activities work year-round.

Gulf Shores Beach Weekend is the classic Alabama family trip. Stay near Gulf State Park, spend mornings on the sugar-white beach, afternoons at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo or the Wharf entertainment district, and evenings eating shrimp at a waterfront restaurant. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is perfect for family bike rides.

Huntsville Space & Nature Weekend combines the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (home of Space Camp) with Monte Sano State Park. Kids can touch a moon rock, ride a G-force simulator, then hike mountain trails and explore caves. The Huntsville Botanical Garden is another excellent stop.

Birmingham Adventure Weekend starts at the McWane Science Center (hands-on exhibits and an IMAX theater), then heads to Oak Mountain State Park for swimming, hiking, and the Alabama Wildlife Center. The Birmingham Zoo and the Vulcan statue (the world's largest cast-iron sculpture) are nearby.

Little River Canyon Weekend from Fort Payne offers canyon rim hikes, waterfall viewing at DeSoto Falls and Little River Falls, and the quirky shops of Mentone. True Adventures Sports in Mentone offers zip-lining and kayaking for older kids.

Mobile Delta & Bay Weekend includes the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, the Exploreum Science Center, and a boat tour of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta to spot alligators and birds. Cross the bay to Fairhope for ice cream on the pier.

Lake Martin Weekend is all about the water — swimming, kayaking, pontoon boat rentals, and sunset watching. The town of Alexander City has mini-golf and family restaurants. Wind Creek State Park has easy campgrounds right on the lake.

Civil Rights History Weekend in Montgomery is educational and powerful for older kids. The Rosa Parks Museum, the Freedom Rides Museum, and the Legacy Museum present history in age-appropriate, interactive ways that leave lasting impressions.

Alabama family weekends are affordable, diverse, and always a good time.
