    Scenic Overlooks in Alabama

50statesQuiz.org Editorial TeamAlabamaUpdated March 1, 20265 min read

Alabama's overlooks are concentrated along the Appalachian ridges and river gorges of the northern part of the state, with a few surprises elsewhere. These viewpoints offer sweeping vistas that rival anything in the southern Appalachians.

Bald Rock Overlook (Cheaha State Park) is Alabama's most iconic viewpoint. A short boardwalk from the parking area leads to a massive granite outcrop at 2,300 feet, with views stretching across the Talladega National Forest to distant blue ridgelines. Sunrise here is spectacular.

Pulpit Rock (Cheaha State Park) requires a short hike but rewards with a narrow rock promontory jutting out over the valley. The 360-degree views and the sense of exposure make it feel much more dramatic than its elevation suggests.

Little River Canyon Rim Overlooks dot the canyon rim along AL-176. Multiple pull-offs provide views straight down 500+ feet into the gorge, where Little River cuts through ancient rock. The colors in autumn are extraordinary.

Noccalula Falls Overlook in Gadsden provides a bird's-eye view of the 90-foot waterfall and the gorge below. The park has walking paths along the rim with multiple vantage points.

Monte Sano State Park Overlooks above Huntsville offer views across the Tennessee Valley. The stone overlook shelters built by the CCC add historic character. On clear days you can see Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and the curve of the Tennessee River.

Buck's Pocket State Park near Grove Oak sits in a deep canyon carved by South Sauty Creek. The overlooks from the canyon rim look down into a densely forested gorge that's especially beautiful draped in morning fog.

Weathington Park Overlook in Fort Payne provides a panoramic view of the Wills Valley and the surrounding mountains. It's an easy stop for anyone exploring the Little River Canyon area.

Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park south of Birmingham has a bluff trail overlooking Roupes Creek valley. While not as dramatic as the mountain overlooks, the combination of industrial history and natural beauty is uniquely Alabama.

These overlooks prove that Alabama's Appalachian heritage delivers world-class views.
