Best State Parks in Hawaii

Hawaii's park system is split between state parks and major federally managed sites, and the state parks matter most for the coastline, lookouts, and cultural sites they open up rather than for large backcountry acreage.

Waianapanapa State Park

On Maui, Waianapanapa is one of the most iconic state park settings in Hawaii, its black-sand beach — formed from eroded lava rock — sea caves, and rugged East Maui coastline giving it outsized visual power relative to its modest size. Reservations are required, a sign of how much demand the park draws.

Iao Valley State Park

Also on Maui, Iao Valley protects the dramatic, moss-covered Iao Needle, a roughly 1,200-foot volcanic spire rising from the valley floor, and the site carries deep historical weight as the location of a decisive 1790 battle in Kamehameha I's campaign to unify the islands.

Polihale State Park

Polihale on Kauai is one of the state's rawest beach parks. Long sand, remoteness, and the visual backdrop of the Na Pali edge make it feel much less developed than the resort-facing parts of the islands. Access can be rough, but the isolation is part of the draw.

Makena and Hapuna Beach Parks

Some of Hawaii's most valuable public parks are beach-centered. Makena on Maui and Hapuna on the Big Island are strong examples: open shoreline, major swimming and sunbathing appeal, and enough scale to function as all-day destinations.

Kokee State Park

Kokee on Kauai shifts the state-park conversation into upland forest and canyon country. It is one of the best places in the state for cooler temperatures, mountain access, and dramatic inland scenery, especially when paired with nearby Waimea Canyon.

Diamond Head State Monument

Although small and heavily visited, Diamond Head matters because it is one of Hawaii's most recognized public landscapes. Not every great state-managed site is remote. Some are important precisely because they give dense urban areas direct access to a landmark.
