Best Family Weekend Destinations in Ohio

Ohio has exceptional family attractions — Cedar Point is world-class, Hocking Hills engages children of all ages, and Columbus and Cleveland have excellent children's museums and zoos.

Cedar Point (Sandusky)

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (Powell)
Consistently voted one of the best zoos in the US — famous director Jack Hanna built the collection over 40 years. The zoo has 10,000 animals in naturalistic habitats: the Congo Expedition (gorillas, okapi), the Asian Quest (komodo dragons, tigers), the Aquarium, and the Polar Frontier (polar bears). The adjacent Zoombezi Bay waterpark makes it a full family weekend.

Hocking Hills State Park
Old Man's Cave is accessible to children 5+ — the canyon trail requires some scrambling on stone steps. Ash Cave (flat trail, 0.25 miles) is stroller-accessible. The Hocking Hills Canopy Tours (zip lines above the forest) add a thrill element for older children. The nearby Conkle's Hollow has the rim trail for adventurous teenagers.

National Museum of the US Air Force (Dayton)
Free admission to the world's largest military aviation museum — four hangars of aircraft from the Wright Flyer to stealth bombers and space capsules. The presidential aircraft hangar (Air Force One planes used by FDR through Nixon) is extraordinary. Allow a full day.

Great Lakes Science Center (Cleveland)
On the lakefront adjacent to the Rock Hall — the NASA Glenn Research Center exhibit includes a moon rock, a Gemini space capsule, and the only IMAX theater in Northeast Ohio. Well-suited for ages 5–14.
