Ohio's Highest Points and Notable Terrain

Ohio is not a mountain state — its highest point barely reaches 1,550 feet. But its eastern Allegheny Plateau has terrain of genuine character, and Hocking Hills' sandstone formations are among the most atmospheric in the eastern US.

Campbell Hill (1,549 ft)
Ohio's highest point — a glacial till mound in Logan County (near Bellefontaine, "Belle-fountain"). The site is on private property (a telecommunications facility) but has a monument accessible on foot. The surrounding area is agricultural — the summit is unremarkable, but the story of "mountain" in Ohio is a humbling lesson in continental geography.

Hocking Hills Sandstone Formations
The most dramatic terrain in Ohio — the Black Hand Sandstone (a Mississippian-age sandstone with a natural tendency to form overhangs and recess caves) creates formations up to 100 feet high. Ash Cave's 700-foot-wide recess cave is one of the largest in the eastern US. Conkle's Hollow gorge is 200 feet deep. These aren't mountains but are genuinely dramatic landforms.

Nelson Kennedy Ledges
Sharon Conglomerate ledge formations in Portage County — sandstone and quartz pebble conglomerate forming vertical cliffs and narrow passages, remnants of Carboniferous-age stream deposits. The formations reach 30–40 feet — modest, but the passages and caves have a distinctive character.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park (Brecksville)
The Cuyahoga Valley — a forested river corridor between Cleveland and Akron — has terrain reaching 300 feet above the river. The Ledges in the park (Sharon Conglomerate formations) and the Beaver Marsh boardwalk are the scenic highlights.

Allegheny Plateau (Southeast Ohio)
Wayne National Forest in Athens, Morgan, and Noble Counties has rolling forested hills reaching 1,200–1,400 feet — the most expansive forested landscape in Ohio. The hilly character is unmistakably Appalachian.
